I had a meal here about three weeks ago. I wouldn't have intuitively guessed that Latin & Thai cuisine would go together so well and the 'Talay Foo Dogs' out front at the spot (see above) were a bit cheesy, but the food was amazing and decently priced. Talay is highly recommended.

Click here for more info on Talay and the West Harlem Piers.

Online:

Talay Restaurant - website

So when everyone else queues up for the same stretch of SoHo sidewalk, head to one of these great city spaces to skip the crowds."

Click here for the full list. How'd they miss 230 Fifth though?? I swear I have never seen a bar, especially an outdoor one, this big.

The fifth installment in the Other Side series features critically acclaimed rapper/producer Madlib's personal audio tour of the City of Angels. Highlights of this genre-bending mix include the eclectic/outrageous jazz consciousness originator - Sun Ra Arkestra, 60's psychedelic blues quintet Outlaw Blues Band, legendary reggae drummer (Burning Spear) Leroy "Horsemouth" Wallace, Jamaican record label head/DJ Producer Prince Jazzbo, and Madlib's own tunes- as Beat Konducta (solo) & with collaborator Jaydee (Jaylib).

On The Other Side Los Angeles DVD, Stone's Throw label supremo Peanut Butter Wolf is your personal guide to LA's sights, sites and sounds. The DVD also features an in-depth interview with Peanut Butter Wolf on 10 years of Stone's Throw as well as videos from several Stone's Throw artists.

From the unlikely beach town of Oxnard, 40 miles north of Los Angeles, the multi-dimensional Madlib quickly rose to prominence as one of the most interesting figures in late-'90s hip-hop. With his childhood buddies in the Lootpack, Madlib quickly made a name for himself as a rapper, producer, and DJ. In particular, his expansive style and deft touch for composition made him one of hip-hop's most sought-after producers. An enthusiastic crate digger, with a deep reverence for jazz and soul, Madlib branched out into a number of ambitious, engaging solo projects. // <!-- D(["mb","u003c/font>u003c/div>nu003cdiv> u003c/div>nu003cdiv>u003cfont faceu003d"Arial" sizeu003d"2">With the Other Side, a new generation of immersive ntravel guide is upon us. Deaf Dumb & Blind Communications, a new progressive nand multi-faceted entertainment company, teams up with internationally nrecognized travel guidebook and weekly magazine publisher Time Out to produce a nseries called The Other Side - an CD/DVD experience that submerses its nlisteners/viewers entirely below the city's surface.u003c/font>u003c/div>nu003cdiv> u003c/div>nu003cdiv>u003cfont faceu003d"Arial" sizeu003d"2">Each volume of The Other Side boasts two key nelements: a mixed CD compiled by a native audio pioneer and a DVD guide that nacts as a visual handbook for both the seasoned traveler and armchair adventurer nalike. While some travel guides aim to be comprehensive, The Other Side nisn't concerned. It simply wants its user to enjoy and discover the very nbest and coolest in sight and sounds. It whispers in the user's ear advice on nwhere to go and what to see - and it does it with unprecedented style and nflair.u003c/font>u003c/div>nu003cdiv> u003c/div>nu003cdiv>u003cfont faceu003d"Arial" sizeu003d"2">That's why Time Out is a perfect match for Deaf nDumb & Blind's concept. According to Peter Fiennes, Editorial/Managing nDirector of Time Out Guides, "We're extremely happy to be working with The Other nSide and Deaf Dumb & Blind on this exciting new concept. We've always been nkeen to expand into music, CDs and travel on DVD, but The Other Side gives nus the chance to do it all at the same time. The Other Side has lined up nsome great artists and we're convinced this will be a very successful and nground-breaking project."u003c/font>u003c/div>nu003cdiv> u003c/div>nu003cdiv>u003cfont faceu003d"Arial" sizeu003d"2">TRACKLISTING: u003cbr>1) The Lightmen Plus One - nEnergy Control Center u003cbr>2) Cybertron - Clear u003cbr>3) Dabrye feat.
Only in New York would a restaurant that sells its house merlot by the glass for $14 be described as "Moderate to Expensive." Luckily I'm making some money and have a corporate card now which eased the pain of checking out 66 in Tribeca last night.

With wasabi-coated peanuts as the free bar snacks and potato scallion pancakes and foie-gras & shrimp dumplings (both excellent) the cheapest (and apparently the most popular) items on the appetizer and dim sum menu at around $6-8, this chic looking lounge-restaurant is being heavily slept on by the typical yuppie Tribeca crowds who flock to this part of town for their nights out. Perhaps it's the slow-ish service?

I was pretty stuffed after a couple birthday cup cakes and the aforementioned pancakes and dumplings, whose servings were both larger than I expected, so I didn't taste the full dinner menu which is nominally Chinese-inspired but basically Pan Asian. Most everything else appetizer-wise on it was $10 and up and entrees didn't get much cheaper than $20. Nevertheless, I'd give this place a recommend rating anyway. What it lacks in buzzing crowds is more than made up for in quality food and cool atmosphere.

It might also make for a good casual first date or meeting spot. Besides being not so crowded that you can actually carry on a conversation without screaming, you'll also look like you have taste but without having to get played by snooty maitre d's or hosts making you wait endlessly for a table at whatever's the current hot spot in town.

66 is located at 241 Church Street (between Leonard and Worth) in Tribeca, New York City. Call (212) 925-0202 for details or reservations.

Click here (and then on the "restaurants" tab) for more info on 66.
