Overlooked in '06: Aloe Blacc

medium_Aloe.jpg Not content with running the underground hip hop game, the Stones Throw record label decided to get into the "R&B" game and dropped one of the most challenging soul music albums in who knows how long last summer in Shine Through by new artist Aloe Blacc.

It's hard to really do this album proper justice in a review: dude basically takes sounds from the entire spectrum of the black musical disapora from jazz, blues, black folk field music to R&B, afro-latin jazz and hip hop and distills it down to a single, thoroughly modern yet unique sounding album.

Of course that being said the sample track I offer is "Gente Ordinaria," the relatively conventional sounding Spanish language remake of John Legend's modern soul standard "Ordinary People." It's a hot track but trust me, you need to really investigate this album completely for yourself. It's worth it especially if you are the type who's into progressive music and always looking to hear that proverbial "next sh-t."

I gave Shine Through, a shot.

It's alright. Song-by-song it is mediocre, but as the whole package it is above average.
